4 FLORIDA WINTER LANDSCAPING TIPS

Updated: May 9, 2023

Although Florida's winters are not severely cold, you should still keep up with your lawn and garden plants during this time to avoid any damage. One night of harsh temperatures ranging from 30s to 40s is cold enough to do some damage to your yard. Taking care of your landscaping will also ensure that your lawn looks great when spring and summer come around. Consider these these 5 tips from NF services to protect your lawn and plants from Florida's winter weather.

1. PRUNE YOUR TREES AND BUSHES

This is the best time of the year to selectively remove branches and roots that may be dead or growing in the wrong direction, as well as brushes or shrubs that have grown too large. This will reduce the size, decrease risk of breakage, clear up space, and look over-all more polished. If you are not familiar with proper pruning, consider hiring NF services to handle the job for you.

2. INSTALL MULCH

Make sure you have mulch installed in your garden beds and layered at about 3-4 inches. The mulch will stabilize soil temperatures, keep roots warmer during the winter, and help sustain soil moisture. It will also inhibit weeds, help reduce soil erosion, and improve overall plant and tree health. Feel free to book a mulch installation appointment with us here.

3. CONTINUE TO WATER PLANTS

This is not the time to neglect your plants, specially newer ones. Since it does not rain frequently in Florida during the winter months, it's important to continue to water your plants, trees and shrubs. While the plants above the ground are dormant during winter season, their roots are still growing and require moderate watering.

4. COVER TENDER PLANTS

Some plants need to be protected from the cold just like we do! Covering your more sensitive plants during this time will protect them from freezing temperatures and possible frostbite. You can either use cloth or special coverings from local nurseries, but never use plastic as it can cause condensation and lead to burnt leaves from sunlight exposure.

We hope these tips help you keep up with your lawn during this winter season. If you are in need of landscaping in Central Florida or have general questions, feel free to contact us today!
